Costumes

For our music video, we have decided to create a 1940's style. By this we will dress our characters in 1940's style clothing. This type of clothing includes polka dot tea dresses, high waisted trousers, old fashioned shoes for the females. For our main male character, we would dress him in a basic white shirt, with smart trousers and possibly with suspenders.

We were inspired by the film 'The Notebook' and we will dress our characters like they do in the film. The flashbacks will be in the 1940's theme, however the present day clips we will be as normal.
From this, the audience will be able to tell easily that the scenes are as flashbacks.

The characters hair will be styled in the same sort of way as they wore in the 1940s. This is mostly curls, pins and backcombed. We will style our main man character by creating a side parting and a small flick.

As well as the outfits we want to create the make up in the same style as the 1940s. For the girl character this would include her wearing bright red lipstick and winged eyeliner. The eyes will have natural/ neutral colours with a contour in the crease of the eyelid.

* Unfortunately, after researching into the 1940s costume and set design we'd need, we've decided to not use this idea. Even though it would be effective, we do not have the time/money/resources to use it, and our feedback agreed. *

1940s costume ideas

  • Our ideas include using two types of costumes; modern and 1940s (from our inspiration of The Notebook). This will fit in with the idea of passionate, romantic memories between a couple who are now apart.
  • 40's type dresses trousers etc.
  • 40's hair and make up.
  • Old fashioned bike. (Provided by Alannah)
  • Acoustic Guitar.
  • Rain.

    Artist Research

If possible, we hope to have an interview with the singer of this song, Robert Godfrey. We have made a list of questions we would ask him.
    • Who and/or what inspired you to write this song?
    • Are you happy with how the song turned out?
    • Is this your typical genre of song (e.g love, romance etc) ?
    • If you were making the music video what would your idea's be?
    • What do you think your album cover would look like?
    • What kind of songs would your album include?

    Inspiration

For our music video, we have decided to use a 1940s theme. Our inspiration for this is from a traditional romantic film, The Notebook. The Notebook is a well known film based on the book by Nicholas Sparks. In the film, a poor, passionate young man and a wealthy young woman, trapped by her strict parents, fall in love, and he helps give her a sense of freedom in the summer they spend together. However, they are separated by their social differences, but, despite the obstacles of her parents and new fiance, are reunited in the end.
The Notebook is a fairly predictable love story but is extremely well known and never fails to tug on audience's heartstrings. We hope to portray this kind of love story in our music video, using the 1940s theme in costumes and mise en scene. Typical outfits are playsuits and dresses, and undone shirts with vests and trousers. The girl's hair will be curled and clipped back, and the boy's will be slightly slicked back and parted.
This will link to Goodwin's Music Video Analysis as we will refer to the Notebook throughout our music video, using location ideas, such as the bicycle scene. Allie and Noah (the main characters) go on a bike ride together and it's an extremely romantic scene. We hope to use the Country Park in Milton to film this as it is a similar location.

Our scene in the rain is also inspired by The Notebook. One of the most famous scenes in film history is the raining scene when the pair kiss for the first time since being apart.

    Target Audience Research

After studying our chosen song, the lyrics, and the image of the artist we were able to establish our intended target audience. The audience we are after, who we feel the song will appeal specifically to, are females, ranging ages from around 13 years old to women in their 40s. The reason for having such an age gap and why feel the music will appeal to a vast amount of women, is mainly due to the representation of the artist. His young look and music resembling love firstly appeal to younger girls as stereotypically they are more interested in love stories, therefore the message behind the lyrics and the romance within the music video will capture the younger generations attention. In terms of appealing to older women, it's more the message within the lyrics that they might find appealing, as the artist shows a good sense of maturity and passion with his music, therefore seen as impressive and ac-knowledgeable.

Lyrics Analysis - 'Letters' by Robert Godfrey

The lyrics of the song we have chosen are typical of a romantic love song, with themes of being alone and writing letters, linking to the title of the song. To relate to the song, our video will also be typically romantic.
The lyrics highlight how the singer still loves her, but they are obviously alone and apart - "I love you, but I'm not close enough to be heard" and "You've been gone too long" show this.
The lyrics also show how the artist is dreaming of seeing her again - "I'm gonna walk out that door 'til my feet leave the floor, then I'll fly over shore 'til I see, you sitting down over there with your windswept brown hair writing letters, just for me" shows that he wants to be with her again. This line also introduces the theme of writing love letters. The theme of letters is shown again when it says "send this away in the red box today".
The lyrics are also very strong in showing how much the artist loves this woman - "I'll give you my soul, just to keep your control and I'll watch over you from above" are very intense lyrics, and shows that he would do anything to keep her with him.
Overall, the lyrics powerfully display the artists' feelings for this woman, and we hope to convey these strong emotions in a romantic music video.

    Initial ideas

After hearing the tracks for the first time, we have decided on our top three potential songs, with some initial ideas for videos:

    1.) Adele - Lovesong
This song is a very slow, romantic song about someone who loves someone deepy and truly. The idea we have come up with is of a young woman going through the motions of her day - waking up, getting ready, walking to a cafe and waiting there - singing throughout the whole thing, as if she is thinking out loud about the one she loves. Towards the end, the man will come in, and they'll walk away laughing and talking - not "into the sunset", as that is very cliche, but just down the street - a normal, young couple in love. The colours will be black and white and will eventually fade to show bright, happy colours as the video progresses - showing the man brightens her life. The pace will be very slow and peaceful to match the song.

2.)  - Way Back Into Love
We picked this song as we liked the idea of a female and male duet. We thought it was unique from the other songs because of the duet. The song is telling a story of two people finding their way back into love. The idea we have come up with for this song is having a man and woman being separated at first and finally finding each other again. The video would contain flash backs of their memories together which would be created in the style of a dream. The colours would be soft and happy to match the song as the song has a lot of happy emotion. We would use symbolism in the music video for instance a necklace that the man once brought her. The  pace of this video would start off calm however as the video goes on the beat gets faster so the mood gets jollier towards as the couple reunite.

    3.) Robert Godfrey - Letters
This song is an acoustic track about love and relationships, presenting a very soft melody throughout. The idea behind this song is to express the theme of romance to our intended audience. After establishing both the man and woman using the split screen technique through the editing process, we hope to highlight their contrasting unhappy lives through their facial expressions and unwilling movements. We will do this through a range of close ups and medium shots to clearly express their sadness and frustration. The scene will progress onto showing individual shots of the characters to allow the audience to see from an individual perspective how the characters behave and how things are beginning to brighten up. Again through the use of camera shots, but also following Goodwin's theory of linking the lyrics to the visuals, allowing the audience to understand how much love can affect a person. The final part of the song progresses to the reuniting of the couple, with the woman turning up at his door in the pouring rain, holding a letter that was sent to her. The letter and the whole concept of love written for someone sums up our music video and leaves it with a typical happy ending. The video will be set in very homely areas, where one would feel most comfortable, suggesting they are too hurt to leave their homes, however we will include montages of happy moments between the couple in more social areas, such as cafes and parks, to contrast the happyness with when they were together to the sadness of being apart. The artist's music, lyrics and concepts of love attract a female target audience, and we hope our video will almost resemble a movie scene from a love story and engage the audience into the narrative.
